چکیده

We report preliminary results of a 3-year multifrequency polarization campaign of 15 AGNs of blazar type, including bimonthly total and polarized intensity imaging at 7 mm with the VLBA. We find that the sources have two different dependences of degree of polarization on wavelength: sub-mm peaked or straight “polarization spectra”. The fractional polarization of the latter group increases with frequency. All sources with sub-mm peak polarization (6 objects) have similar degree of polarization in the optical region and in the VLBA core. In high-optically polarized sources (5 objects) the EVPAs at all frequencies align with the pc-scale jet direction within the 1σ uncertainties. This implies that the high frequency emission is co-spatial with the VLBI core and/or transverse shocks in the jet.

Understanding Blazar Jets Through Their Multifrequency Emission

Being dominated by non-thermal (synchrotron and inverse Compton) emission from a relativistic jet, blazars offer important clues to the structure and radiative processes in extragalactic jets. Crucial information is provided by blazars’ spectral energy distributions from radio to gamma-rays (GeV and TeV energies), their trends with bolometric luminosity, and their correlated variability propert...

Multifrequency and Iue Campaigns on Blazars

The IUE contribution to the understanding of the blazar phenomenon has been of fundamental importance. Here I review the progress obtained with the latest multifrequency campaigns performed with IUE on two prototype objects, the BL Lac PKS 2155-304 and the highly polarized, superluminal quasar 3C 279.

Are high polarization quasars and BL Lacertae objects really different? A study of the optical spectral properties

The continuum and emission lines properties of a sample of 73 blazars is studied, investigating differences and similarities among normal low–polarization quasars (LPQ), radio–loud high polarized quasars (HPQ), and BL Lacertae objects (BLL). We found that at variance with LPQ, most HPQ have power lawoptical continua (fν ∝ ν)with no indication of blue bumps or strong FeII and Balmer emission. Co...

High Frequency Peakers: young radio sources or flaring blazars?

We present new, simultaneous, multifrequency observations of 45 out of the 55 candidate High Frequency Peakers (HFP) selected by Dallacasa et al. (2000), carried out 3 to 4 years after a first set of observations. Our sub-sample consists of 10 galaxies, 28 stellar objects (“quasars”) and 7 unidentified sources. Both sets of observations are sensitive enough to allow the detection of variability...

Roma-BZCAT: A multifrequency catalogue of Blazars

We present a new catalogue of blazars based on multi-frequency surveys and on an extensive review of the literature. Blazars are classified as BL Lacertae objects, as flat spectrum radio quasars or as blazars of uncertain/transitional type. Each object is identified by a root name, coded as BZB, BZQ and BZU for these three subclasses respectively, and by its coordinates. This catalogue is being...
